My mother is a 10+ year breast cancer survivor; but it was always something the family didn't discuss, you just dealt with it. You didn't talk about it to strangers, or post anything about it on a website.
But we all know someone who has battled breast cancer or another form of the disease. Almost everyone we know has in one way or another been affected by it, whether directly or indirectly.
So why Shimmy For the Cure? Because we have a very inter-connected and supportive dance community here. We all know each other, we are all sisters in dance.
Far too many dancers who are close friends, acquaintances, and friends of friends have been diagnosed with various forms of cancer. Feeling frustrated and wanting to do "something", I organized the first Shimmy for the Cure in 2008.
Since then, each year on Mother's Day as many local dancers and dance students who are available join us in the Susan G. Komen 5K Race for the Cure held at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. We aren't die-hard runners; we run, jog, walk, skip, shimmy, and dance the route in celebration and in memory of our sister dancers and family members who are faced with cancer. What's important is we complete the 5K in their honor, now how fast we finish or how we get to the end.
While the focus of the Race for the Cure is breast cancer, our Shimmy for the Cure encompasses all forms of cancer. It's an incredibly positive and uplifting experience to be part of such a huge event celebrating the strength of women in the face of adversity.
I hope you can join us, hip scarves and zills are encouraged!
